Best time of year to sell a car in the UK

When demand peaks, when values dip, and how plate changes and seasons affect what your car is worth.

Written by the SellMyPremiumCar valuation team · Reviewed against live UK market data · Updated October 2026

In short

The best time to sell a car in the UK is usually February–March and August–September, just before the new-plate months, when buyer demand and dealer stock-buying peak. Convertibles and sports cars sell best in spring, and 4x4s in autumn and winter.

How plate changes affect value

New plates arrive in March and September. Dealers buy stock in the weeks before to meet demand, so offers often firm up in February and August.

Seasonal demand by car type

Convertibles and roadsters fetch more in spring. Four-wheel-drive SUVs such as the Range Rover and Defender attract more buyers as winter approaches.

Age and mileage milestones

Values step down at the three-year MOT, at the end of the warranty, and at round-number mileages such as 30k, 60k and 100k. Selling just before these points protects value.
